Below are just some observations from a 1st time newbie based on what I have seen in the beta. I know those who have played before know this and more. But surely there are others out there like me, I have seen and heard them in the game. So if we have other friends coming in for the open beta and they are new, too...then this might help. Everyone please feel free to add any additional advice.
Just a quick heads up of for those interested in Final Fantasy XIV:ARR and are considering your character build/class: your choice of class MATTERS in this game and you will be expected to play the traditional role that comes with that class. Your class also affects which city your begin the game in.
Those who have played FF before probably know that already. I had not and I have come across many others who did not know this, so I thought I would throw it out there for anyone coming into the game fresh. The game depends on teamwork and you do play in random teams often.
There is is something called 'duty finder' where you are matched with others looking for the same quest. You will be assigned a role according to your class and you will be expected to play according to that role. Here are the starting classes.
Gladiator - sword/shield - will be the TANK, best with one main boss *edited* JOB - PALADIN begin in Ul'dah
Marauder -great axe - can be TANK (best with mobs) or rarely DD (damage dealer) but only when partied with GLD *edited* JOB - WARRIOR begin in Limsa
Lancer - 2hand spear/polearm - will be DD JOB - DRAGOON begin in Gridania
Pugilist - hand-to-hand - will be DD JOB- MONK begin in Ul'dah
Archer - bow - ranged DD JOB - BARD begin in Gridania
Conjurer - cane/yew - HEALER (*not* damage dealer), CNJ will always be expected to be the healer of the group JOB - WHITE MAGE begin in Gridania
Thaumaturge - dagger/staff/sceptre - ranged DD using elemental forces, can be the healer in party ONLY if there is no CNJ - meant to deal damage. *edited* JOB - BLACK MAGE begin in Ul'dah
Arcanist - this will be a spell class using grimoires & a pet Carbuncle, to be released in open beta JOBS - SUMMONER and SCHOLAR begin in Limsa
If you want to play in a 'unique' way (examples - bow tank, conjurer DD, gladiator DPS, etc.) then it would be my suggestion that you be prepared to find a few friends that would be willing to quest with you *all the time, every time* - because the game will not lend itself to odd role combinations.
Several people in the game beta have mentioned that they were not aware of the role that they would be expected to play when they chose their class. Many come from other games where the class was a different role (in WKC - mage was great at damage, spear was great tank for example). Some chose class based simply on weapon preference, not aware of the role attached to it.
This is why I wanted to try to give some advice in advance of the game launch and the open beta. I hope this helps anyone else new to the game.[/i]
